Christmas adventures

Othello is awesome, I kinda wish that I could play it but oh well, just got to keep myself busy with bigger and better things.

We lost our car keys while sledding at a members home and we've been without a car since, so we've been hanging around with the Mandan Elders for a while since we really can't get around the mission w/out a car, anyway,

 Happy New Year!

Learning and growing

I've been real busy with transfers and conferences and finals at the college we e-mailed at, so we were
shooed away. The conference was alright, they handed out the letters that you guys wrote to us, and we took a hike around Martin's Cove to see the sites over there which was cool. (in 2 ways, awsome, and freezing the wind was not nice that day) I suppose I've learned a lot, the way I see it I learned more in the MTC about the gospel and such then I did going to church for 20 years so yeah I would say that I've learned :)

Was I inspired to do more? I don't really know how to answer that question, I suppose you know me I'm more of a "do what my comp wants to" kind of person which is good I'm still getting a decent amount of
work done, so no complaints.

Its really annoying having two companions and I'm glad that, that is done and done, when you get three people together, especially after two of them have already spent a decent amount of time together, they have a habbit of leaving the third person out of a lot of things, and that they did. They tried a lot harder at the end after they had sort of gotten to know me, but by then it was way too late,

and now I'm in Bismarck with a almost as new as me Elder, Elder Foulger, who came out in September. I really hoped that I would have more chances to try out these recepies, however, most days we get dinner appointments, especially lately, so I really haven't had to sit down and make myself food all too often. I think I've made myself a sandwich 2 times since I've been in Bismarck, but oh well its alright.

Muslimism

Yeah, I know, interesting subject line, but it is now the topic of discussion, Alright, so we have this Foster kid staying with one of our recent converts, and he really really wants to be baptized, only a handful of things stand in his way... number 1, he's slightly mentally handicapped, he's 16 years old and has the education of a 3rd grader, and you can kind of sometimes tell when your talking to him that he's not quite understanding everything that your saying, which leads to problem 2, he doesn't understand what were saying, he learned
that baptism was a cleansing of our sins via Foulger and he got really excited about that and now will only really talk about baptism which is actually working as a distraction toward trying to teach him gospel principles (who knew) the third problem is that he is a foster child, not up for adoption, since they don't know where his family is (because of all the wars in the Sierra Lion region) theres no way to contact them to OK the baptism, so we have to work with his representative which won't be in town until the 29th and I really hope that she is alright with it, because w/out her say so there will be no baptism. And the fourth reason is what the subject is about his family were practicing Muslims back in Newtown in Africa, and I know there was something going out a little while ago about not being aloud to baptize Muslims, that I don't fully understand. I've heard that if he ever tried to go back, being baptized to a Christian religion he wouldn't be accepted and probably killed for it, I've also heard someone tell me that if you are baptized to a Christian religion over here they will kill your family over there... I was hoping you guys might know more about that and maybe can shed a little light on my problem... anyway thats our friend Mohammed all luck to him.

Bismarck, ND

Wool socks are always in short supply, and these "V neck" sweaters aren't very V necky (you can't even see my tie most the time :( ) but for the most part I'm doing just fine, Ties are like gold here, missionaries trade them, admire them, have more fun then they should with them. A good tie gets the attention of any Missionary, it's kind of funny.

Elder Foulger is, interesting, hes a tall, lanky kid 6'3" and only weighs like 160 lbs hes funny when he talks, but doesn't seem to talk to me all that much. Oh before I forget what was with all the cards you (and assumingly other missionary parents) have been sending? before I even told you I got transfered Elder Foulger got a letter addressed to him and his old companion Elder Kinsey (they actually got a lot) but when they opened it it said from the Kissners, I was quite shocked I have to admit.

I live in an apartment, but its pretty nice, I actually have more room to move around then I did in the members home oddly enough, however it is a chore to keep clean, you wouldn't believe the things I find around from Elder Kinsey before me and also all the mess there was when I first got in was... annoying to say the least. I've tried to leave Foulgers stuff as it was but at least the apartment looks somewhat better since I moved in... Anyway have fun enjoy time and life.

Transfer time!!!

Well this week has definately been interesting.  I think I'll cut right to the chase. So on Monday our zone headed up to Casper for a tri-zone conference / Martin's Cove hike which was cold but cool at the same time.  So anyway, when it came time Tuesday afternoon to go back to Gillette we all loaded up in the overcrowded transfer train and headed back, only to find we left our cell phone in Casper (Bennett's fault) and somehow ended up with Sheriden 1st wards phone. (see above)  So we priority mailed their phone to them, and Casper taped our phone to a turtle and pointed him in this direction (we still don't have it and it's Monday again) but anyway transfers were happening this week and my zone leaders were completely lost as to what was happening this transfer.  They had no ideas without a means of communication so we struggled through the week lost in a mist of disconnection unable to find the iron rod of communication (lame puns...)  When suddenly yesterday we went on splits with the spanish missionaries we took one with us and gave them Bennett (he was called spanish speaking but hardly uses it) well when we finally got back together Bennett (who now had use of spanish's cell) told me the mission president has been looking all over for me and that I was being transfered to Bismarck North Dakota.... tomorrow (which is now today, laundry dry faster I need to pack you!!) So I've got a 2 day trip ahead of me to get from Polar ends of the mission up to the North Pole er... I mean Bismarck to spend the winter (wonderful, wonderful cold)

but I suppose all is well here, we had a baptism Wednesday, one lady praying for a baptismal date and another totally ready all we got to do is pop the question. So the work has been going all right no real complaints from me except I should of bought a more conservative beanie (hee hee elmer fudd hat) and way more than 2 pairs of wool socks.  On top of that, even though it gets really cold we're asked not to wear jackets if we can help it.  He said "I'd rather you wear 3 sweaters before you put on a jacket", which makes going into hot places torture but oh well.  I need to buy new sweaters too while I'm thinking about it.  hmmmm... Oh well, suppose I'll call you soon.!!

Life in Casper.

So ya, today Emerson and Bennett ditched me for a zone conference, so for the next day and a half I'm with Elders Seguin, Underwood, Wuthrige and Ortiz (the former two being my "comps") and they are definitely more laid back in terms of "doing" stuff on P-day.

So tomorrow is the first day of December and it feels kinda weird, time moves so slow it feels like I should be further in my mission by now, but oh well.  It hasn't started snowing yet (well not a decent snow) but I'm dreaming of a green Christmas (yeah I know, keep dreaming)

I'm getting headaches more frequently, its sort of annoying, I'm sick of cigarette smoke in every house.  I've noticed that 80% of the people have word of wisdom issues.  It's always a difficult thing to overcome and people don't like being told to quit.

Tell people to write to me!!

P-day after Thanksgiving

Emerson and Bennett are heading over to Rapid City for a zone conference and I'm being passed off to another set of missionaries for a day or two.

You know I never thought that I would quite miss college as much as this, we e-mail in a college library and it makes me reminicient of the old Lied Library back in town (while this one is still like 1/30th the size or more) it has 4 rows of books and about 15 computers (Gillette High Quality right there) but anyway, twas an
average week full of some people being cool and some people being completely retarded, we got a new good investigator who was bascially asking me by the end of the lesson "so... you think there could be a prophet today?" *slap in face* ummm..... yeah! yeah there is in fact meet my friend Tommy Monson... so yeah shes good and we got one who used to be good give us a phone message that basically said "thanks for coming all the time, never come again" um... what???

oh well such is the life of a missionary, everyone hates you or thinks too highly of you... there is such a small grey area... tons of people hate you and well you know how that goes and others are like ooooh! Missionaries! here we give you food now! oh we love you so much!

No real snow up here yet, a little bit here and there but nothing of depth, which is good...doesn't mean its not cold, stupid wind likes to randomly increase 10-20 mph in about 30 seconds, its like great... now I'm walking into the wind and its 10 degrees with wind chill... just what I wanted to tract in.
I about puked on Thanksgiving (oooh story time) actually not really story time... I lied (the paranthesis are a lie?) I had originally 4 dinners planned which on its own would have ended in disaster, but we managed to
fandangle it down to 2 dinners which isn't all bad I suppose... after the first dinner (which we had like 3 ppl forcing more food on us) we went to a Hawaiian family where the dad is 6'8" and a very large man, (he deadlifts 650 lbs O.o) and yeah... he served up our plates and it was huge... and after I barely
managed to get that down he handed us all 1/4 of a whole pumpkin pie slice piled about 4 inches high with Cool Whip... I about died.... I almost threw up so many times but after letting each bite settle for a minute or two I barely managed to push another one down and then wanted to throw up again for a minute or two. We
had another guy come later in the meal and served himself up a plate and I almost threw up just watching him eat.

What are you doing out on that mission?

Questions:  The boys and me would like actual day by day account of what your doing?

Who you met, Did you get into any homes?
What is the zone leaders doing with you?
What do they do most of their day?
How big is your Zone area?
What type of food you guys eating?
How many elders in your Zone and mission?

Monday: Pday, (today) went to do e-mails, room full, went shopping bought stuff

came back doing e-mails

Tuesday: (last week's) District meeting in the morning, saw Shila a good
investigator, but her family thinks shes nuts for believing in Jesus and Joseph,
ran around with pamphlettes ate at the Dobsons (I dont remember what probably
Lasagna) went to see Cridels for first time (for me) very awkward family, very
quiet and therefore harder to teach.

Wednesday: studied all morning comp studied Spanish so I just overread the
Bible, had an orange for lunch cause I was dumb and bought bread and nothing to
go on it, so also had a slice of bread (dont get me wrong, its good bread) saw
Kirie (oh boy) she was a good progressing investigator, however she's lesbian
and not about to change that, saw the Lazurus family, parents are both inactive,
but want to go to the temple for the first time. Saw Don, Marie, and Doug all of
which smoked multiple cigarettes while we were there and drank beer, I think I
still smell like smoke after that almost a week later. Went to see Kat an
investigator w/ a baptism date that were going to have to push back because
saturday she had 2 ciggarettes had dinner at Kat's (Enchaladas, wow its not
lazagna) then we saw Scott Boydkin, who to this day I really dont remember for
some reason.

Thursday: Planned for the next week in the morning (after study) where we talked
about our investigators and what they need and stuff. Had lunch (same as
yesterday) then went out to deliver pamphlettes for 5 and a half hours... I
never want to see another pamphlette, we had dinner at the Wettons (fajitas)
they live forever and a day out of town, we split up into two teaching groups
with a member and ran around to peoples houses, me and Bennett went to see Denny
Tester, a hilarious family with all sorts of humor and jokes to go around, and
we went to see Tom a curious guy, not always sure what his hangups are about the
church I think he thinks the Book of Mormon is just a copy of the bible.

Friday: Studied, went to a meeting, worked at the Soup Kitchen for a couple
hours making grilled cheese and turkey samwiches and a really good salad and
other random stuffs. Went to see Crowell, a very... how do I put it Opinionated
person who is definitly not afraid to tell you. he would rather you kick in his
teeth then have to go to a mormon church with all those happy smiley people and
their screaming children even though he is mormon. more pamphlettes more splits,
saw the Shermans and the Freemans both of which I can't think of atm.

Saturday: Had breakfast with the Stake President, more studying and spanish
studying, Went out with Kat again to a Chinese buffet and of course ate too
much, pamphlettes, went to see Tanya and Wyona a mother and daughter that live
together with the daughters twin 1 year olds who really just don't have the
drive to do what we ask, they care their just a little too lazy. Went to a
Samoan family named the Taos to have Beef and Rice (this is another one of those
too much food days) then went to see the Cridels again and had a decent lesson.

Sunday: Gave a talk in the College Branch about the importance of Modern day
prophets and how they testify of christ and the book of mormon, and got asked to
give another talk next sunday, was also asked to give a spiritual thought in the
night branch and was asked to act in the Gospel Doctrine class. We also went to
see Shila's family again and watched Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the
Restoration with them. We also saw Don for the last time, he's moving to
Chicago, he was a really good investigator who thought the church made perfect
sence, but wasn't quite ready to be baptised. We saw somone who was being
teached before named Tony, who bascially, nicely said "I'm not interested" but
we talked with him anyway.

Lots of people, yes

Teaching me... and going to zone leader meetings...

Teach, pamphlette, soon to be tract, and talk to pplz...

First Assignment

Elder Kissner got his first assignment this week.  He arrived in the Mission home on Monday, and was in transit by Tuesday.  Sometime Wednesday he should have arrived at Gillette Wyoming.  It is a medium sized town.  He has 2 zone leaders for training companions.  Elder Bennett from Mesa Arizona, and Elder Emerson from Roy, Utah.  Elder Bennett could probably give him advice on acclimating to the weather.  Sis. Layton said that there are a lot of missionaries from warmer areas, like Arizona and Nevada.  He is very fortunate to get 2 zone leaders for his first companions.  He's the only one who gets to have 2.  It may be because Elder Wolfe had his apendix removed the day before they were to leave the MTC.  I'm sure he will catch up to them soon.

Gillette is on the North East side of Wyoming, and north-east of Casper.  The high today was 56.  That's not bad at all.  I'm sure he will do great and soon love the cold weather.

Doing fine, it's a little overwhelming of course here in the mtc, having to

learn all of these lessons and spend 24/6 working on them (we try to avoid

working on them on prep day) and yes you can say I'm learning lots of stuff...

its crazy all the little nuances that go into teaching, but I've become a hecka

better teacher on like all instances not just these missionary lessons so

yeah... I leave for South Dakota on monday, flight leaves at 10:30, were

spending the first day at our mission president's home then being sent away to

our locations, Its funny my comp Elder Wolfe, who lives in Orem, sent his e-mail last week and got

a package the same day with a message from his mom in it saying "that was a

terrible e-mail" so hes got same day delivery lol So yeah alls well in Zion I

suppose! enjoy the real world!

Arrival at the MTC

We left the house on Tuesday morning for our trip up to Provo.  About 3 hours into the trip we got a text from Darian telling us that the Optometrist called to say that Brady's eyeglasses were in.  Oh well, just a little to late.  Mom will have to mail them to the MTC.

We stopped at the Missionary Mall in Provo.  (smaller than you would think, but we bought a few things).

Then we went to find this special ice cream shop that a family in our ward told us to go to.  Now there is a reason why we had to stop for ice cream.  A month or 2 ago, Brady gave up sugar.  He tried to go with out eating any treats, and checked the labels of most food products before he ate them, just to be sure.  He did really great and inspired me to try better also.  He did tell me once though that ice cream is the one thing that he can't resist.  So before I send him off from my influence for 2 years we had to get him a really special treat.

The store is called "Sub-zero"  It's really cool.  You pick out what type of ice cream you want, (premium, custard, low-fat or frozen yogurt) and they pour the cream mixture in a bowl with whatever flavors you want added to it, then they spray it with liquid nitrogen, instantly freezing it.  It was suprisingly probably the best ice cream I've ever had.  He loved it to!

Then we drove to Mike and Sharon Millers house in Salt Lake.  They fed us dinner, undetered by the ice cream we'd just had, and three grandkids played and jumped on Allen and Brady.  It was a really nice visit.

We got up the next morning and realized that Brady is going to be ironing alot of white shirts the next two years.  The suit didn't wrinkle in the suitcase, but the white shirts are a whole other story.

We had lunch with our old home teacher and his wife, Dennis & Sharon Knox, who now live in Midvale.  We ate at the Olive Garden in Provo, and watched as nearly every other group coming into the Olive Garden that day also had 1 young man in a full missionary suit.  I'm not sure why that surprised me, but I thought it was kind of funny.

Well the drop off at the MTC is just that... there were a ton of missionaries standing around on the curb waiting for cars to drive up.  Brady had three missionaries ready to take him away and get him settled.  They took his suitcases for him.  We only had time for a quick hug and off he went, with a shell shocked look on his face.  Ready for the adventure of a lifetime, with the opportunity to grow that he won't get anywhere else.  We are so proud of him, and looking forward to watching his growth.
